Water guns, fake referees, garbage boys, student DJs, chest painted students, Tiktok videos and Instagram content can all be seen with the advent of Mrs. Shelby Stringer’s new Spirit Team, which focuses on the improvement of social media presence and athletic turnouts.
Mrs. Stringer, an English teacher at Brophy, was appointed as Stampede Coordinator at the beginning of this year, in order to make a more focused effort on supporting Brophy in athletic events, home or away. There has been a notion that sporting events and school events are more of an underclassman activity than a whole school activity.
Mrs. Stringer looks to deny this concept.
“No Brophy event is just for underclassmen,” Mrs. Stringer said.
Mrs. Stringer is focused on engaging the whole Brophy community, not just a small facet of its population.
This new branch of the Student Council, known as the Brophy Spirit Team, has also made an impact through social media platforms.
“Our social media platforms have increased about 10%,” Mrs. Stringer said, referring to the increase in followers to applications such as TikTok and Instagram.
They post small video clips or more informally known as Reels on apps such as Tiktok and Instagram in an attempt to draw more attention and excitement to athletic events.
Excitement is exactly how Brophy Spirit team member Patrick Tanner ’25 feels about this new look to Brophy’s Student Council. Tanner has been a member of the Student Council for two years now, and is beginning his third with this new vision.
Tanner spoke on how with this new branch Student Council is more organized and spreads the focus evenly.
“How we split up the teams helps to get out more content,” Tanner said.
Student Council this year is split up into different teams with each having its own focus. Tanner believes this has also led to more improved ideas.
This is improved from previous years where the Student Council has been only one team with limited teacher support.
But with this team being a branch of the Student Council, there is a selectability issue with this new rollout. To participate in the creation of this hype on campus, you must be either on the Spirit Team or appointed to help by its leaders.
If anything was learned from the first football game of the season, it showcased the refreshed social media presence and revamped strategies from the Spirit Team are helping to boost athletic crowd support. This is no come and go change, Brophy is looking to be the number one student section in the great State of Arizona.
