In a world where social media and its influencers are becoming much more defining in our society, the choice of putting yourself out onto the internet becomes much enticing, and for a good reason. The benefits of a public account supplement to be much more than the pros of having a private account.
The biggest benefit of having a public account, that is especially relevant at Brophy, is the marketing and connections that athletes can make with colleges and coaches. University of Nebraska commit, and Brophy offensive-lineman, Logan Powell ’25 has seen social media to be beneficial to him when connecting with college coaches.
“I believe it has been especially helpful since I can share my film and accomplishments with them,” said Powell.
And the more these coaches view the student athletes, the more likely they are to keep seeing the athlete’s plays and highlights because of the “algorithms” that are used on the various social media applications; including “X”, “Instagram”, and other social media platforms.
Mr. Mica Mulloy ’99, the assistant principal of instruction and innovation also believes that public social media accounts have the ability to be a great networking tool.
“To reach out and connect and network and share highlight videos and stats and all sorts of things, right? I would say that sort of thing is probably the biggest pro that I would see with having a social media, public social media account,” said Mulloy.
Public social media accounts are great networking outlets, but many users fear that coming into communication with that have bad intentions, and students can often fall onto those paths. However, this “fear” can be used as a learning moment for young athletes that attend Brophy and other schools.
“The added responsibility is that you have to be really careful about what you post, right,” Mulloy.
The pressure of having to think about what you post or like on these social media platforms might be concerning for parents and users, but it’s a big opportunity for high school students to learn the best way to market themselves and their talent.
