Lightning Ends Brophy-Pinnacle Scrimmage Early

After just four plays, lightning struck near Pinnacle, cutting short the Brophy-Pinnacle preseason scrimmage on Thurs., Aug. 21, 2025.

Brophy was set to have their varsity and JV teams each play Pinnacle, but the referees quickly called the game due to lightning in the area. Both teams waited for the storm to clear up but it never did, canceling Brophy’s only preseason game.

When asked about how the game getting stopped will affect the team’s preparation for the season, varsity guard Bran’nu Brown ‘26 responded, “It will allow us to use all our strengths and all we wanted to take out yesterday into our next game against Basha.”

After losing to Basha last year, the Broncos will look to channel that intensity into the redemption matchup.

Brophy will play Basha in its first home game of the season Thursday, Aug. 28 at 7:00 p.m.

Wisconsin camp teaches student the value of living in the moment and initiative

Zac Oseran ’28 begins each year with fresh memories in mind. Each summer he embarks on a journey to a summer camp in Wisconsin with his brothers. Bonding them together, the long time tradition has fostered important values such as living in the moment into Oseran’s life. Following his brief summer experience in Wisconsin, Oseran applies his takeaways to life at school. “You get such a limited time there even though it feels so long that you got to make every moment matter. So I’ve kind of just taken that and put it in my daily life,” said Oseran. The idea of living in the moment is something that drives Oseran in his day to day life at school. President of the Sports Business club, a recent endeavor focusing on teaching students how to manage a professional sports team from the eyes of a general manager, Oseran keeps busy with his extracurricular activities. But not only does Oseran run a club, he is also an avid debater for Brophy Speech and Debate, and also a competitor on the tennis team, with aspirations of making varsity tennis in the future. “My goal this year is just high JV. So then junior and senior year I can make varsity. I’ll be happy there,” Oseran said. But despite the increasing pressure of college applications that is beginning to arise, Oseran is deliberate on staying driven by making the most of his time, a skill that his brief summers in Wisconsin taught him. Oseran said, “Obviously like college applications are in the back of the mind always, but I mean going through high school years, like the main goal should just be: ‘have fun’.” Inspired by his summers in Wisconsin, Oseran is focused on living in the moment and having fun, looking to manage his high school years into something successful he can appreciate now and down the road.

Through the lens: Anthony Francis finds his focus in photography

On the sidelines of Brophy sports games, sophomore Anthony Francis ‘28 is typically camouflaged in the background behind the camera, recording the action that most people don’t even see. What began as a casual hobby on his phone during family trips has blossomed into a driving passion that now fuels his high school life. “This year in March, I decided to just go to a game and try it out, and I ended up really liking it,” Francis said. “Now I just do it all the time.” Born and raised in Scottsdale, Francis shares the determination of his parents, who came to the United States as immigrants from Iraq before they started a family. “Because of that, I am more determined, and I feel like I just want to make them proud,” Francis said. In school, Francis gravitates towards numbers. “I’ve always been more of a math kind of guy instead of writing and reading,” he said, noting algebra as his favorite subject. Outside the classroom, golf offers him a chance to unwind when he’s not working on his photography. While he does not know where he will be in the future, Francis is pleased with what he has accomplished so far and motivated by his parents’ success. If he had any advice for his younger self, he said it would be to “eliminate procrastination from my life as much as I can, and stay committed to what I like.” For now, Francis is focused on improving his craft, one snapshot at a time.
