The full force of the Bronco offense was unleashed in the first few minutes of the Gilbert game Friday, Sept. 3, as Devon Allen ’13 caught an early pass in the first series for a 33-yard touchdown.
Allen went on to rack up 115 yards in the game as Brophy beat the Gilbert Tigers 18-6.
After starting strong the offense began to slow, resulting in a number of incomplete passes and slow drives.
“They (Gilbert) did some things that we did not expect and so we wanted to make sure we got the right calls in there,” said head coach Mr. Scooter Molander about the pace of the game.
New starting quarterback Tyler Bruggman ’13 completed 10 out of 30 passes, eight of which were in the first half.
Mr. Molander went on to say that the Bronco offense is relatively new and that there is still huge room for growth.
As the fast tempo of the offense began to slow, the defense took over and kept the Tigers in check for most of the game, forcing Gilbert to many punts.
Bronco defenders racked up four sacks in the game; Charlie Beck ’11 had two and Ethan Cooper ’11 and Danny Riggs ’11 had one each.
Garrett Wilson ’11 and Matt Cahal ’12 each had an interception.
Penalties were another player in this game. There were a total of 17 penalties in the game, seven of which belonged to Brophy.
Mr. Molander said “penalties are inexcusable” and that they were mainly from the players “getting lazy with their feet.”
The Broncos kept Gilbert off the board during the first half and started the third quarter with an 18-0 lead.
Receiver Josh Dennard ’11 had a touchdown in the game and Zac Bryan ’12 made two field goals, including one from 46 yards.
Next week Brophy plays rival St. Mary’s at Phoenix College.
