Costly comedy cast shadow over issues in Congress

By Brian D. Brannon ’11
THE ROUNDUP

The doors of Congress opened Sept. 24 to Stephen Colbert, a major comedian on Comedy Central.

Colbert testified on the current situation of migrant farmers, and how our economy can’t survive without them.

“I don’t want a tomato picked by a Mexican. I want it picked by an American. And sliced by a Guatemalan, and served by a Venezuelan, in a spa, where a Chilean gives me a Brazilian wax. ” Joked Colbert as he pointed out how integrated migrant workers are in our society.

“ As you heard this morning, America’s farms are presently far too dependent on immigrant labor to pick our fruits and vegetables.”

Colbert was invited by certain members of the committee to testify, due to his brief experience picking vegetables for a day with migrant workers.

Some laughed at his act in front of congress, but it deeply offended several members of congress.

Ranking subcommittee member Steve King commented, “Maybe amnesty supporters should spend less time watching Comedy Central and more time considering all the real jobs that are out there that require hard labor.”

The amount of time and money spent to adjourn a committee meeting should be better spent on finding ways to create new jobs on all levels so the unemployed and migrant workers can find better jobs.

This whimsical meeting created nothing but a huge expenditure, an approximate , and is a perfect example of Congress’s fiscal irresponsibility.
