THE ROUNDUP
The nationally ranked Brophy soccer team lost only once during the regular season.
That loss came at the hands of the Desert Vista Thunder; the team Brophy squared off against on Saturday, Feb. 5 in the 5A-1 soccer playoffs.
In the regular season, Brophy lost to Desert Vista 3-1 but in their second matchup, only one combined goal was scored.
Brophy had several chances throughout the match to score a goal but many of their shots sailed just wide or just above the Desert Vista net.
The game was a physical one and was played with visible tension between the two squads.
In the final two minutes, the Broncos got a steal from senior Esteban Obregon ’11 that led to a game-winning goal from Riggs Lennon ’13.
After the goal, the team and the group of Brophy students in attendance huddled together in a celebratory mosh pit.
The Broncos held on for the final minutes of the game and the crowd rushed the field to revel in the playoff victory.
With the victory, the Broncos advance to the semifinals where they will face Yuma Kofa on Thursday, Feb. 10 at Gilbert Camp Verde.
