First Down: Broncos avenge playoff loss to Mountain Pointe

Last season for the Broncos ended in a second-round playoff defeat to the Pride by a score of 13-12.

However, the teams’ next game against each other Sept. 30 resulted i

n a Brophy 31-14 win.

“Mountain Pointe has been running the ball very well against just about anyone,” said coach Mr. Scooter Molander. “I’m proud of our guys for recognizing formations and then for the most part we tackled well and we really ran to the football.”

After falling behind in the first quarter, Brophy scored 31 unanswered points.

Tyler Bruggman ’11 went 11-22 for 156 yards and three touchdowns, all to Fred Gammage ’12.

Second Down: Broncos remain undefeated in first six weeks

With Brophy’s victory over Mountain Pointe, the Broncos maintained a six-game winning streak, and more importantly, an undefeated season.

Last year, the Broncos won five total games in the regular season and another game in the first round of the playoffs against Mountain Ridge Nov. 12.

The best regular-season record for the Broncos in the past several years is held by the 2005-2006 team with a 9-1 record.

The Broncos have four games left against Westview, St. Mary’s, Westwood and Pinnacle.

Westview and St. Mary’s games are the last two season home games, which means the Broncos play on the road against Westwood and Pinnacle for the last two weeks of the season.

Pinnacle is currently undefeated as well throughout the first six games of the regular season.

Third Down: Offense continues to scores 30-plus points

Whether it has been a road or home game for the Broncos, the offense continues to score points.

In every one of the Broncos’ first six games, the offense has scored at least a total of 30 points. The season-high for Brophy is 50.

The season-low amount of points per game for Brophy is 31, which has occurred twice for the Broncos in the first game against Mountain Ridge and the latest game against Mountain Pointe.

The largest deficit the offense has overcome in a game this season is seven points. The Broncos have only trailed in two games this year against Red Mountain and Mountain Pointe.

The Broncos have scored a total 234 points in the first six games with an average of 39 points a game.

Fourth Down: Defense maintains low scoring for opponents

Just as the offense has continued to score more than 30 points each game, the defense has contributed as well allowing a total 67 points in six games, an average of 11 points a game.

Last year, the Broncos’ defense allowed 115 points in the first six games and wound up giving up a total of 239 points in the season and playoffs combined.

The Bronco defense is also currently in second place for fewest total points allowed in their section within their division. Desert Vista is first with a total of 55 points allowed.

Brophy’s next opponent, Westview, has scored a total of 313 points in the season. Westview has also scored 49 points or more in all five wins.
