THE ROUNDUP
Saturday, May 5 may have been the busiest sports day of the entire 2011-2012 school year for the Brophy community.
Four different Bronco squads competed in playoff games and matches Saturday. The tennis and lacrosse teams both won their respective state titles while the baseball and volleyball teams won their playoff games.
First, the Brophy tennis team defeated the Desert Mountain Wolves by a score of 5-1 to capture the state championship, thanks in large part by comeback victories from Alex Curtis ’12 and Hudson Blake ’13. The teams played at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale at 11 a.m.
Just a few hours later, the Brophy volleyball squad faced off against the No. 22-seeded Seton Catholic Sentinels.
The Broncos won the match in three games to advance to the state quarterfinals where they will play the Desert Vista Thunder Tuesday, May 8.
At 6:30 p.m. Saturday night, the Brophy baseball team beat the eighth-seeded Hamilton Huskies by a score of 10-2. This victory came two days after earning a walk off win against Desert Ridge.
The win advanced the Broncos to the semifinals of the state tournament, where they will face the second-seeded Chaparral FirebirdsThursday, May 10. The two teams have split the season 1-1 thus far.
As the baseball game was still in progress, the state championship lacrosse game began between the Brophy Broncos and Chaparral Firebirds. The Broncos looked to avenge their state championship loss to the Firebirds the year before.
The Broncos won the game by a score of 8-5 and Zack Zemer ’12 was named MVP. The victory completed the undefeated Arizona season for Brophy.
Although they were not in action on Saturday, the Brophy track team is still competing as they finish up their season in the state track meet on May 11-14.
The Broncos return after capturing their first ever state title in the meet last season.
