Brophy 13

THE ROUNDUP
Even with Brophy’s defense holding the opposition to 17 points and forcing five turnovers, the offense was unable to muster up enough
points Thursday, Sept. 14 as the Broncos fell to Centennial.
The defense recovered four forced fumbles and had an interception from safety Leonard Gutierrez ’14.
“They ran the ball effectively and our defense did a good job getting some turnovers,” said head coach Mr. Scooter Molander. “We just couldn’t do anything on offense.”
Brophy’s first score came mid-way through the second quarter when Isaiah Oliver ’15 turned a 5-yard comeback route into a 51-yard touchdown.
The pass came from quarterback Cade Knox ’16, starting in place of Brian Woodward ’14 who was out with a hand injury. Oliver broke free from the defender’s tackle and outran the secondary to the end zone. They went for the 2-point conversion, but failed.
Just a few minutes later, Brophy recovered a fumble and Will Edwards ’14 punched it in for a 2-yard touchdown on the next play.
Brophy went into halftime leading 13-7.
Centennial took the lead with a touchdown early in the third quarter and shortly after followed that with a field goal, making it 17-13.
Knox tried to hit Oliver on multiple deep passes in the second half, but couldn’t connect on any of them.
Knox finished the night with 78 yards, going 8 of 16 passing and also had 12 yards rushing.
Oliver had one catch for 51 yards, a carry for seven yards and fumble recovery on defense.
Brophy did not score in the second half of the game, which led to Centennial running out the last four minutes on the clock as the Broncos had no timeouts left and could not stop their offense.
“We weren’t able to capitalize on those turnovers. We just missed some opportunities.” Mr. Molander said.
This was Brophy’s second straight loss after falling to Hamilton Sept. 6. It brings their record to 1-2 on the season and they will face Red Mountain Friday, Sept. 20 at home.
