In the last 45 seconds of the game Friday, Oct. 10 Streator Bates ’15 connected for a 47-yard field goal and Isaiah Oliver ’15 intercepted a pass to lock down a 31-28 Brophy win over Mountain Pointe.
Bates and Oliver were joined by a cast of Bronco contributors to take down one of the top ranked teams in the state for Brophy’s fourth win in a row.
“Fourth win in a row, against Mountain Pointe who is probably the second best team in the state,” Oliver said. “I mean you can just tell that the progress we have made since August has been a big deal, so we are just going to keep on riding it.
The Broncos won the coin flip and started with the ball.
They immediately got things going as quarterback Cade Knox ’16 completed a pass and ran three plays in a row for a total of 41 yards.
They were set on the three yard line and Ryan Velez ’16 ran it in
The Broncos forced a three and out and Mountain Pointe punted the ball.
The Broncos drove down the field again after productive completions to Noah Pittenger ’17.
Velez ran for another three yards into the endzone to give the Broncos and early 14-0 lead.
Mountain Pointe responded by charging down field with a 78-yard rushing touchdown. After a fumbled PAT the score was 14-6.
Less than a minute later Mountain Pointe intercepted the ball and they ran in another touchdown before a successful 2-point conversion to bring the score to 14-14.
At the start of the second quarter the Broncos pushed downfield and Knox connected with Pittenger for a 10-yard touchdown, making the score 21-14.
Mountain Pointe had one last chance before the half to kick a field goal, but Isaiah Oliver ’15 blocked the kick as the half came to an end.
Mountain Pointe started the second half with the ball and ran 35 yards into the endzone, tying up the game 21-21.
The Broncos steadily made their way down the field before Knox completed a 44-yard touchdown to Robert Brooks ’17.
On the kickoff the Broncos’ Tecory Robinson ’16 recovered a short kickto put the team in good field position.
Mountain Pointe came up with an interception two plays later.
After five minutes of slow runs by Mountain Pointe, they successfully found their way into the end zone. The third quarter ended with a 28-28 tie.
The game slowed down in the fourth quarter as the two teams combined for five punts.
With three minutes left to go Joshua Benjamin ’16 forced a Mountain Pointe fumble, which Brophy recovered.
With 45 seconds left in the game Streator Bates ’15 kicked a 47-yard field goal, making it by just a few feet to put Brophy up 31-28.
Oliver quickly intercepted a Mountain Pointe pass with less than 40 seconds to go, allowing Brophy to run out the clock.
“It was just everything we do every week, I had confidence in my long snapper,” Bates said. “It was just another kick, we gotta go through the motions.”
The sophomore Pittenger played a big role in the game as he caught 111 yards and a touchdown.
“I’ve been doing it since third grade ever since I’ve started,” Pittenger said. “I just try and run my legs hard, I don’t want to be tackled by one person.”
Head coach Mr. Scooter Molander pointed to both sides of the ball as reasons for the win.
“We never quit fighting and you know we had some special things on offense, our defense never quit. I’m just so proud of our staff and our fans coming out, it was a full team effort,” Mr. Molander said.
