2nd year head coach Lewkowitz relies on seniors to help lead team

Last year’s state championship soccer game went all the way down to penalty kicks, where Fergus Shanks ’15 made the game winning goal.
Brophy held a 22-2 record and went on to win the state championship for the second year in a row.
The season was an experience that taught both players and coaches how to be even better prepared for this year’s season.
“These guys need a break during the season … you can’t push them too much, especially towards the end,” said head soccer coach Mr. Noah Lewkowitz. This will be his second season as varsity head coach.
He said the class of 2014 taught him a lot about the role of seniors on the team.
“I learned last year about the power of relying on the seniors to help lead the team,” Mr. Lewkowitz said.
He said he has optimism about this year’s group of leaders.
“They are eager to be leaders of the team and they saw some great leadership from the guys last year,” Mr. Lewkowitz said.
This year’s seniors say they are ready to step up to their new leadership role.
“We need to lead by example, always work hard and be there for the younger guys,” said Bret Schumacher ’15.
Many of the players are returning from last season.
“Team chemistry is super important … you can have a really talented team but if you can’t play together there is no success in that,” said Michael Peay ’15.
This year the Broncos have a 12 game season schedule with traditionally challenging games such as Tollesson and Salpointe, according to Mr. Lewkowitz.
Along with these games, the team will also travel to California for two tournaments.
“California schools are always really good. It’s good to play against skilled teams because it always makes you better,” Schumacher said.
After tryouts and the team is selected in early November, Mr. Lewkowitz will be seeking to “discover what we do best and try to do that as best as we can.”
