Social Golf Club’s membership has exceeded more than 100 students since its foundation at the beginning of the ’24-’25 school year. Founded by Ms. Highland Turby, former Division 1 golfer and current math teacher, and headed by Peter McLaughlin ’25, also a staff writer for The Roundup, the Social Golf Club has marked its own as a premier club on campus. However, the question looms: What does it have to offer and why is it so popular?
According to founder Ms. Turby, instead of being confined to the halls of Brophy, like other golf clubs at Brophy, Social Golf Club will extend to the courses. As a result, Ms. Turby highlights that the main goal and drive of this club is to get students directly involved and exposed to the game of golf and to make “golf accessible to everyone, not just the eight that make the team,” said Ms. Turby.
By being involved and experienced with golf, Ms. Turby said “[golf] also helps you in business…[it] opens the door for connections.” Additionally, golf has enabled people to create lasting friendships. “One of my best friend[ships] last year, I made through golf, “ said Peter McLaughlin ’25. Through the Social Golf Club, the founders highlight the ability to make connections and create lasting friendships, while learning more about the intricacies of the sport.
In order to accomplish this goal, Ms. Turby and Peter McLaughlin ’25 plan to have bi-weekly outings throughout the year, already having done one on September 13th. These outings will be inclusive to a wide array of people with differing skill sets. Notably, Ms. Turby plans to have a senior golf scramble in the spring. This includes a closest-to-the-hole challenge; this event will also include prizes. To make the club more informative, Ms. Turby plans to have professional golfers speak during community periods.
