Tyler Spielman ’24 led the Brophy golf team to the Division 1 AIA State Championship on Oct. 27, 2022, winning the individual championship along the way.

The Broncos shot a state-record total score of 529 throughout the two-day tournament. The Hamilton Huskies finished second, 34 strokes behind the Broncos. Brophy had fallen short to Hamilton in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Spielman posted a two-day score of 17-under-par. In his first round on Wednesday, he shot 10-under par, the lowest single-round score in AIA state championship history.

Even though he was leading by a large margin, Spielman said he kept the same mindset heading into Thursday, focusing on fairways and greens. Spielman’s total score of 17-under-par 123 was also an AIA state championship record.

Spielman is the fifth individual champion from Brophy, and the first since Ben Hayes ’01 in 1999.

In an interview after the final round, Head Coach Mr. Jon Shores said, “I knew we were good. To post 31, 32-under … that’s amazing. So I’m really pleased for the boys.”

Mr. Shores said Spielman’s performance was impressive, and that he had never coached anyone with the confidence that Spielman brings to the course.

The state championship is Mr. Shores’ third in his time as head coach at Brophy.

Charlie Palmer ’23 finished second overall, shooting an 11-under-par 132. Henry Dall ’24 shot a 6-under-par 137, tying for fourth with Trevor Karber ’23. Dylan Boenning ’25 rounded out the Brophy state team, finishing in 9th place overall.

Palmer said that he was very happy to finally top Hamilton.

“It felt really good coming out here for my last year, ending on a high note. It’s been tough being second every year to Hamilton, but we had a really good squad this year.”

The championship is Brophy’s first since 2018. Before that, they won seven times between 1985 and 2011.
