Brophy 66

Chaparral 60

By Jack Davis ’19

The Broncos beat rival Chaparral Dec. 11 by a score of 66-60 as Matthew Kempton ’17 and Drew Shear ’17 combined for 19 points in the second half.

This was Brophy’s second win of the season.

Neither team could gain separation to start. The Broncos and Firebirds traded baskets to the tune of a 10-10 tie at the end of the quarter.

Center Sean Dunn ’17 scored several times in the post in the second quarter, but the Broncos allowed 15 points on defense and were unable to overtake the Firebirds in the first half. Brophy trailed 25-23 after the second quarter.

Dunn scored in double figures, adding 10 points and a slam dunk.

“I just have to hand this one to my teammates for giving me the open looks, and I was looking to attack with an opportunity to score those clutch points,” Dunn said.

The Broncos came out of the halftime gates firing, outscoring Chaparral 22-10 in the third quarter.

Brophy surrendered 25 points to Chaparral in the fourth quarter, but held on to a six point win.

Kempton and Shear combined for 19 points in the second half, with Kempton adding seven free throws. Shear was the teams’ second-leading scorer with 11 points.

Sophomore Ian Burke ’18 delivered a scoring punch for the Broncos, with 12 points and a three-pointer.

Bo Brunkhorst ’16 added 10 points of his own.

On the teams’ win, coach Mr. Matt Hooten praised the chemistry.

”I thought we came out tonight with a tremendous amount of focus and concentration of playing together as a unit. We talked before the game for the need for five players to play as one, and I thought that the players did an absolutely fantastic job of coming out to do that.”

“When we start to see what we’re capable of, when we have that chemistry, playing unselfishly and that ball is moving around the floor, our players begin to understand what they’re capable of as a unit when that happens,” he added.

Dunn pointed to defense and ball handling as part of the win.

“I think our defense really stepped up, as well as the ball pressure and the passing that we made,” he said.

Brophy plays Westview, who knocked the Broncos out of the 2015 playoffs, at Talking Stick Resort Arena on Dec. 22 as they try to reach .500.
