The gates are open when the first student arrives, and the gates close well after all students have left.

For all that students can tell, the gates open and close on their own, but there are in fact multiple people behind the opening and closing of school every day and night.

Mr. John Buchanan, director of security, said a lot happens behind the scenes in order for the school to open and close.

“The schedule rotates through the facilities department, one guy each week,” Mr. Buchanan said when asked who opens the gates in the morning.  “Gates open around 6 a.m.”

Mr. Buchanan said the closing falls on someone else’s shoulders.

“Another member of the maintenance staff closes the gates around 10 p.m,” Mr. Buchanan said.

Jeffrey Peterson ’17 was surprised how late the some of the gates are kept open.

“10 at night is a lot later than I thought they were open,” Peterson said. “That’s really late and I wonder what students are staying on campus for that long.”

Some students do stay at school late, but most students leave campus well before 10 p.m.  The school is kept upon so long in order for the night cleaning services to clean all of the classrooms.  

John Couture ’18, however, is not surprised that the campus is open for so long.

“I’m not surprised at all,” Couture said. “There are so many activities that go on here that the time is needed.  For example, I am part of a play and some of our rehearsals don’t finish until 8 p.m.,” he said.  

Couture also noted that many students stay so long after school because they live so far away.

“A lot of students on campus live far away from campus, and they need to stay at school for a while,” Couture said.
