As freshman, we learned a lot about the five Grad at Grad qualities – open to growth, committed to doing justice, religious, loving and intellectually competent – and we did some assignments involving them. But since freshman year it feels like they have disappeared from the classroom. Teachers rarely talk about them in post-freshman classes and lots of students can’t even name every Grad at Grad. The Grad at Grad qualities are some of the most important things for students to learn at Brophy, but they are almost never mentioned in class. The Graduate at Graduation qualities should be more prominent throughout the entirety of a Brophy student’s career.
The Grad at Grad principles are supposed to help prepare students for life after Brophy, but this can’t happen unless they are thoroughly taught. Brophy is a college prep school after all, so its main priority is to form students for college and beyond. Part of preparing students for life after Brophy is teaching them to be men for others through the Grad at Grads.
Teaching the grad at grad values during students’ whole time at Brophy will help them further value these qualities. Students who show up at graduation after rarely hearing about these concepts will not have any appreciation for them.
Students are also at fault for the lack of prominence of the Grad at Grads. I’m sure that most students at least know what the Grad at Grad concepts are, but many students don’t do their best to embody them. Lots of students are not fully religious or committed to doing justice. Brophy students need to fully embrace the grad at grad qualities to be prepared for life after graduation.
