Back to Campus: End of buck-a-jeans days one of several changes

School also institutes new attendance policy, parking restrictions in north lot

As a new school year rolls around, many rules and policies remain the same, but several regulations in the Brophy Handbook, dealing with student parking, attendance and dress code, have changed.

For starters, the administration decided to do away with buck-a-jeans and buck-a-jersey days. In addition, the “only approved game day attire” for athletes now is Mass dress or their jersey worn over a collared shirt, according to an e-mail from Dean of Students Mr. Jim Bopp.

Buck-a-jeans/jersey days were removed because they generated “a fairly small amount of money,” according to a follow-up e-mail with Mr. Bopp. In addition to their general lack of success as a fundraiser, students were beginning to use buck-a-jeans days as an excuse to be out of dress code on non-designated days.

In terms of attendance, should a student have 10 or more absences from a class during one semester, their “continued enrollment in that class will automatically be reviewed by Brophy’s administration,” Mr. Bopp wrote in an e-mail.

Once reaching the 10 absence mark, should the student be allowed to stay in the course, no more absences will be allowed unless he has explicit permission from the Brophy administration or unless a doctor deems his absence “medically necessary.”

Such changes were made because a committee of faculty members who reviewed the absence policy this summer decided students were missing classes too often for Brophy-related events.

“The administration decided that 10 would be the number at which students should no longer miss for any reason in order to protect the integrity of what happens in the classroom,” Mr. Bopp wrote in his follow-up e-mail.

Student parking will also be changed due to a campus extension project by St. Francis Xavier Elementary this year.

Because of the construction, Brophy student and faculty parking in the north lot will be limited to the first two lanes closest to Brophy.

With only a limited number of spaces available, Mr. Bopp said Brophy administration will be enforcing parking permit policies more strictly than previous years.

Students who park on campus without their 2010-2011 Brophy parking sticker or a carpool (at least two students in the car) will receive two JUGs, unless they are given permission from the Dean’s Office beforehand.

Also due to the construction project, Students cannot enter campus from 1st Avenue between 7 and 8 a.m. Students entering from 1st Avenue will only be allowed to park in the auxiliary lot.

This means all cars should enter campus from Central Avenue.
