St. Mary’s 4
The Broncos walked off the wind swept baseball diamondApril 13 after beating the St. Mary’s Knights on back to back nights and the being the winners of six straight games.
“It’s beating St. Mary’s that adds a little extra to it,” said head coach Mr. Tom Succow. “We didn’t play a pretty game, we had that one blowup inning there, but we kept grinding throughout the game.”
Brophy won 5-4 in the eighth inning.
The team took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning.
In the top of the fourth inning, St. Mary’s scored four runs while the Broncos responded with one run in the bottom half.
The Broncos scored a run in the fifth inning and Connor Moore ’12 batted in the tying run in the sixth on a single to left field.
“Connor Moore came up with a huge base hit to tie it and we had a lot of different guys contribute. Connor Messman ’12 has been catching this week because John Rapisarda ’12 our starting catcher for the last three years has been out with a little knee injury.”
Messman went one for three with an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
“Messman had an ugly play in their but he regrouped and came up with a big double later on,” Mr. Succow said. “So he worked his way on base, his position was the one that scored the winning run.”
The pitching staff also performed well despite adverse weather conditions.
“I thought Graybill did a great job on the mound and I thought Isaiah Deutsch’14 came in and was outstanding,”Mr. Succow said.
Graybill pitched five and one third innings with one strikeout, three walks and three earned runs while Deutschcame in and pitched three and two thirds innings with one strikeout, one hit and no runs.
A clear factor in the game was the wind, which had gusts close to 40 mph.
“It was a factor I think; their left fielder maybe misplayed a couple balls near the left field fence, but you now if the wind hadn’t been blowing a couple of those balls would have been out,” Mr. Succow said. “We were up against the elements, we put the ball in the air too much.”
