Woo paves his way into tennis rankings

By Nathan Bass ‘27

Brophy sophomore Justin Woo ’28 might just seem like a normal Brophy student at first. He takes a couple honors classes, goes to a few football games here and there with his friends, but nothing really noteworthy actually shows up about him. At least, not until you start looking into his sports life.

Since freshman year, Woo has played tennis for Brophy, and through it, he has maintained a reputation as one of the best in his sport. He was ranked No. 1 throughout his whole Freshman Tennis team. He doesn’t think of it as a good display of his skill, however. In fact, his accomplishment on the team “really doesn’t matter because most of the good kids didn’t play freshman tennis,” according to Justin.

He’d had a bit of experience with tennis before coming to Brophy. That is, if you consider four years to be a bit of experience. Sure, he had a head start with all his game time before Brophy, but now, he’s ready to show off his skills on Brophy’s tennis teams.

This year, however, some new accomplishments were added under his belt. This is because he now plays for the Junior Varsity team, and he’s still going strong. He’s currently ranked third best on the JV team, in fact. However, what disappointed him was that there weren’t any important (at least to him) competitions, such as state or regional championships. “We play against other high schools, but we don’t actually play in the state tournament like Varsity does,” he said.

Woo continues to make his mark on Brophy’s tennis, going undefeated in singles for JV and according to him, he works better alone instead of in teams. “I look at tennis as my own solo score,” he said, and with the way his accomplishments have gone, a worthy prediction one could make is that he will continue these impressive stats.
