A new phone policy has been put into place this school year, which prohibits the use of students’ phones from the first bell to the last. Teachers now play a big role in regulating this new policy, but many students are wondering if teachers must follow this new rule.
Mrs. Amanda Ruhl has been a Community Period advisor for 3 years, and has seen a large decline in students and teachers using their cell phones. She expected many students to ignore the rule, but was instead surprised by the reaction.
“I have not noticed anyone using phones, and trust me, I looked. Because I was expecting the opposite, at least at the start of the year,” said Mrs. Ruhl.
Mrs. Ruhl says that teachers were introduced to the new policy this summer and that the staff was strongly encouraged to follow along with the rules, but it was not deemed mandatory.
“We can’t say, hey, you guys can’t be on your phone, but then meanwhile we’re on our phones. And I think it’s just as challenging for us. So it wasn’t like you have to, but it was strongly encouraged, and I think we’ve all really leaned into it.” said Mrs. Ruhl
A policy that staff thought would cause a rise in JUGS, has led to less screen time for students and staff, but still has some room for improvement.
