Hockey team moves up in rankings

By Joe Skoog ’13

The Brophy hockey team climbed to an 11-6-3 record this year, according to

They only trailed behind Notre Dame in the standings.

Goal leaders Eddie Prchal ’11 and Taylor Moorman ’14, who have combined for a total of 22 goals this season, have recently led the way.

According to Moorman, the solid play can be contributed to their work ethic.

“We are out there every day before most people wake up giving it our all.  Our coach teaches us a lot of new things every practice,” Moorman said.

This attitude helped them rebound after the team lost Jimmy Wentworth ’11 at the beginning of the year to a broken leg.

The hockey team practices at Arcadia Ice Arena, which moderator Mr. Lane McShane ’82 calls “archaic.”

“Everyone on the team has had vast improvements to their overall games.  No one is perfect, however we can all rest assured that when someone’s number is called, they can go out and do their job the right way,” Moorman said.

Moorman credits these improvements to new head coach Eric Murietta.

“He has been around the game for a long time, and we are lucky to have him,” he said.

With the current standings, Moorman said he believes they can go far in the playoffs this year.

Standing in their way is Notre Dame however.

“Notre Dame is a disciplined team with a lot of talent, but I believe hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.  And that’s definitely an area where we have them beat,” Moorman said.

In the last game of the regular season against Notre Dame, Brophy won 4-0.

Hockey season comes to an end with close loss

By Brett Mejia ’13

Brophy’s varsity hockey team’s season came to a heartbreaking finish with a 4-5 loss to Pinnacle High School Feb. 27.

The Broncos finished the season with a 11-6-3 record.

“I thought we did really good , when it came down to the playoffs against Pinnacle we did our best, but they got some lucky ones and it was a really close game and I think we had a really good season,”  said varsity right wing player Alex Smith ’13.

For seniors Nick Oleson ’11, Jimmy Wentworth ’11, Max Gaynor ’11, Austin Hale ’11, Shawn Ludgate ’11, Eddie Prchal ’11 and Frank Zimmerman ’11 this was their last year playing for Brophy.

“They (seniors) are the root of the team. Those guys have been out there for four years and they aren’t like basketball were they get a lot of attention, so this loss really hurt them because hockey was over for them,” said Brophy teacher and hockey moderator Mr. Lane McShane ’82.

With nine seconds left in the semi-finals game against Pinnacle, Brophy lost the game with a last second shot by Pinnacle.

On the other side, the Brophy Junior Varsity finished out the season with a record of 14-4-2 with winning the state championship game 3-1 against Notre Dame of Feb. 28.

Forward for the JV hockey team Sean Kelly ’13 took home the MVP by scoring the go ahead goal to help get the victory.

“I was surprised and I wasn’t expecting the MVP and it felt really good to get it. We definitely could’ve played better at times during the year, but overall it, was a good season,” Kelly said.

If varsity would’ve beaten Pinnacle they would’ve gone against Notre Dame for the championship.

“Historically, Notre Dame is our archrival and we have never beaten them before and this season we tied them three times and the final time we played them, we smoked them 4-0 for the first time ever. That was the high point for our season,” Mr. McShane said about varsity beating Notre Dame.

The goal for Brophy hockey next year is to encourage more of the Brophy community to go out and support the team so that they can have a strong fan based crowd to cheer them on.
