Basketball survives Westwood 3-point barrage, grinds out a win

Brophy 43
Westwood 34

By Aakash Jain ’14

Despite a 30-point perimeter attack from the visiting Westwood Warriors, Brophy basketball earned its 17th victory of the season Thursday, Jan. 25 with a score of 43-34.

The entire game, the Warriors were given little access to the paint, forced to almost exclusively score from outside the three-point line.

Any other night, this would have been a blowout for the Broncos, but Westwood just kept knocking down the long shot.

They relied heavily on outside scoring in the first half, making their first two-point field goal with just 1:10 left in the second quarter.

Despite the lack of an inside game for Westwood, the Broncos only led the Warriors by five at the half 27-22.

“I didn’t like it one bit,” said Brophy head coach Mr. Tony Fuller after the game when asked about Westwood’s 10 three-pointers.

In the end, Brophy’s steady and patient offense proved insurmountable, as they continued to pound the ball inside.

With the score tied at 32-32 and five minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Broncos closed out the game on an 11-2 run.

“(We) changed up the defense a little bit midway through the fourth quarter,” Mr. Fuller said. “I think it helped because we were able to break their rhythm and get the lead.”

In this time period, Brophy center Tim Kempton ’13 chipped in 4 points and grabbed a couple of key rebounds down the stretch.

Throughout the game, Brophy guard Fred Gammage ’12, who finished with double-digit scoring, orchestrated the offense effectively and maintained a fast-paced tempo.

“I’m just happy we got the win,” Mr. Fuller said.

After defeating Westwood, the Broncos improved their record to 17-6 and were slated to play Horizon Jan. 26 on the road.
