THE ROUNDUP
The Grammys kicked off its 53rd annual show Feb. 12 glorifying different musical artists with 78 different awards.
The Grammys gives recognition to bands, producers, conductors and artist from different genres, songs, albums and even music videos.
The big winner at the Grammys this time was Adele with her album “21.”
She was nominated for six different categories including best album and best song of the year. She walked home with all six of those awards.
Adele was very deserving of each Grammy she won; her music gives the average listener an emotional attachment unlike most other mainstream music.
SNL nailed how the emotional connection between listeners and Adele’s music by having the comedians automatically crying to their problems when hear “Something Like You.”
She has accomplished her role has an artist, by inflicting emotion and because of that she deserved every award she was nominated for.
Other big winners included the rock group Foo Fighters who won five different awards, and Kanye West who won four awards for his album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.”
Personally I am not a fan of the Foo Fighters but I will give them one thing, which is they have persevered grunge.
They recorded their newest album in Dave Grohl’s garage. They are rockers and they are passionate about their music which gives them an edge in their music.
Kanye West has proved his path in becoming a music legend with yet another near perfect album.
His album starts out with “Can we get much higher” I just don’t know how his music can get any better than it is.
His music portrays it all; it’s catchy, inspiring and most important provocative.
Usually alternative rock has good luck in the Grammys, especially with Arcade Fire winning the top glory of album of the year last year.
Bon Iver became the band to fill into Arcade Fire’s shoes this year when they were nominated for record of the year for their song “Holocene.”
Even though Bon Iver did not take home the award, they took home two other awards: one for best new artist and one for the best alternative rock album of the year.
Even though they are highly acclaimed now I still don’t understand the hype behind their music.
I tend craving to hear their music, but as I listen to it their music seems to fade into the background and it easily puts me to sleep.
There was also losers, which included bands like Radiohead, who seems to be ignored at every Grammys they attend.
With Radiohead’s newest release “King of Limbs” they went back to their previous electronic style like in “Kid A” but it lacked the catchy songs that we have seen in all of their other albums.
Radiohead just didn’t show enough to win a Grammy this year. They had a couple of notable songs like “Lotus Flower” and “Separator” but the other songs were just bizarre.
In addition to awards being handed out, different artists took the stage to perform.
The performance that stood out from the rest was the new single by Cold Play performed with Rihanna.
They were an unlikely duo because of the different styles of music they have, but they sung together exceptionally well, better than most people were anticipating.
But the night was not a totally joyous one though.
The night prior to the Grammys, singer Whitney Houston died and the Grammy committee quickly set up a commemoration for her with a performance done Jennifer Hudson. LL Cool J said a prayer for Houston.
Overall, it had its emotional ups and downs and underdogs came away with awards and new glory.
