The maintenance staff plays a large part to how Brophy functions on a day-to-day basis, but they largely go unnoticed.
Mr. Vidal Barocio has been working with the Brophy maintenance crew for almost five years.
He said that the crew is responsible for doing the unsung jobs, but jobs that are necessary for a smoothly-run campus.
“We do almost everything here,” Mr. Barocio said. “Whatever the boss [Mrs. Sherri Stephens, director of facilities and food services] tells us to do, we can do it … trim a tree, unclog a toilet or whatever we need to do here.”
Barocio said that one of his favorite things about the campus was his exchanges with the student body, who he finds knowledgeable and pleasant.
“There’s very nice people here,” he said. “Everybody is very educated. That’s my favorite because everyone is so educated in greeting the students.”
Another member of the service staff—Mr. Julian Reyes—said that there’s an abundance of things that the crew has to take care of, and that they are responsible for making sure that things are ready when they are needed.
“We open all the gates at the start of the day, make all of the coffee for all of the teachers, we wait for lunch to pick up all of the trash, we set up for events that are going on during the week,” he said.
“We maintain what has to be maintained every day,” Reyes added. “There’s different problems like leaking faucets, leaking bathrooms and leaking urinals. There’s different stuff that we do around here.”
Luke Call ’19 said that he feels grateful for the maintenance staff’s contribution.
“They’re very essential to the school,” Call said. “I definitely take them for granted sometimes by leaving a scrap of trash here and there.”
Mr. Reyes said that his favorite thing about working at Brophy are the Monday through Friday hours and the compensation.
Mr. Barocio said that his time at Brophy has greatly impacted him.
“I think I’ve become a better person, day-by-day,” Mr. Barocio said.
