Brophy golf won the state championship Oct. 29 with Tyler Kertson ’13 scoring 66 and 69.

Altogether, Brophy scored 561 points in the tournament, directly ahead of Desert Vista and Hamilton.

Coach Mr. John Shores took the varsity team to victory.

“We finished one over par, three shots better Desert Vista, four shots better than Hamilton and Red Mountain,” Mr. Shores said.

Ryan Theisen ’13 said that the team was more experienced this year than last year.

“I think the biggest difference this year is experience,” Theisen said.  “Some of the guys who played state last year hadn’t played many big junior events, so when they got to state they struggled under the pressure. This year, we had a lot of really experienced guys.”

Austin Tymins ’13 echoed that the performance of the team was very good.

“Well, like the whole year we had a great team, we had 13 really good guys and they were pushing us to play better, so I think the hardest part was having 13 good guys, because it was extremely difficult to choose the five who were going to represent our team at state because everyone there could have,” Tymins said.

Tyler Kertson did the best, he shot a 66/69, and on the first day he had a hole on one, which I don’t know if it has ever been done in state by anyone,” Tymins said.

Kertson said that he was excited by the experience.

“I did not know it went in until I got there, I was walking to the hole and everyone said it went in and I got excited,” Kertson said.

The players said they are looking forward to the same victory next year.

“Next year we’ll definitely be the favorite going into the season, considering we’re keeping almost everyone on the team. But Red Mountain was in the same position this year and they didn’t play up to their potential. That’s going to be the biggest challenge for us,” Theisen said.

Kertson said he optimistic for next year as well.

“We have a good chance to win next year, a better chance than this year,” Kertson said.
