State championship streak hits 23 years for Bronco swimmers

By Ian C. Beck ’12

The Brophy swim team has been the 5A-1 state champions for 23 consecutive seasons.

They have clinched the title every year since 1989, a year in which rebellions in the Eastern Bloc would end the Soviet Union.

With 33 total state championships, the Broncos have more titles that any MLB, NBA, NFL or NHL team.

Since 1989, many world-changing developments have shaped the way our culture looks today.

In 1990, the Gulf War took the world by storm and the fall of the Berlin Wall reunited Germany.

In 1994, former NFL running back O.J. Simpson was put on trial for murder, a trial that captivated the American sports world and is still considered a landmark occurrence in sports history.

In 1996, the Internet blossomed and made us marvel at man’s rapid technological advances.

A year later in 1997, cloning technology was validated with the cloning of the now-famous sheep Dolly.

In 1999 the world was gripped with fear of the dreaded Y2K, then ushered in a new millennium without many technological disasters to speak of.

In 2001 the 9/11 attacks launched a War on Terror that still rages on today.

In 2004 the Boston Red Sox won the World Series, something that had not happened in 84 years.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated Louisiana and brought America to its knees.

Through it all one thing has been a constant: Brophy’s swim team has not lost a single state championship.

Brophy’s swim team, led by head coach Mr. Pat O’Neill won the 2010 state championship despite just two individual state champions, Bryan Stevens ’10 and Michael Nelson ’12.

The team scored 474.5 points, beating out the second place team Red Mountain by more than 70 points (Red Mountain scored 403).

The world has changed a lot since Arizona saw a state champion other than Brophy but the streak goes on.
