Students, teachers grow mustaches for cancer awareness

By Tanner Nypen ’15

Photo by Kevin Valenzuela '13 - Teacher and student participants in the Movember contest pose to show off their mustaches at the end of the month-long fundraising and awareness drive.

Every November men all around the country will grow out their mustaches in order to raise money for cancer awareness through an even called Movember.

Movember’s goal is to raise money to increase awareness and early detection, diagnosis and effective treatments of both prostate and testicular cancer in men.

The first year only teachers participated. The last two years students were included.

As of Thursday Dec 6th, Brophy participants raised about $5,300 for this cause.

“So two ways primarily (to raise money), the first way is that students pay a buy in fee of $25 to get permission for the dean’s office to grow a mustache,” said Mr. John Damaso ’97. “The second way is by fundraising through Students and teachers set up what’s called Mo-Spaces.”

A Mo-Space is similar to a Facebook. Mo-Spaces have a photo gallery of someone participating in the event and show who has donated and how much they gave to this person. Also visitors can donate to them from their page.

Last year the Brophy Stache Pony raised around $5,800. This year they are just a little bit less of that mark but still close to the previous years.

“I got about 28 dollars donated, that’s not as much as I was hoping for but whatever I can do to help,” said David Tonner ’15.

One in every six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

Testicular cancer is commonly found in men of the ages between 15 and 35. In 2012, 8,590 men will be diagnosed with testicular cancer and 360 will die from it.

Doctors say these cancers and more can be cured if they are caught early enough to be treated.
