Swimming reloads with talented senior class, young contributors

High expectations follow Mike Nelson ’12 and Chris Webb ’12 after emerging as two of the top swimmers in the state as part of the 2010 Brophy team.

Last year, Nelson won the 100-yard breaststroke for the Division I state championship while Webb was part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team at the state meet.

Brophy varsity swimmer Chris Webb ’12 will swim alongside big names such as Michael Phelps in the Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. June 25 to July 2, 2012.

Webb started swimming competitively at age seven, and has racked up numerous state championships.

O’Neill’s swimming background creates coaching success

Ever since his first year of coaching the Brophy swim team in 2006, head coach Mr. Pat O’Neill’s record has showed nothing but success.

Mr. O’Neill began swimming at the age of six and started coaching the sport in college. Starting in 1997, he coached the Mesa Mountain View swim team for nine years before he came to Brophy to coach and teach math.

Swimming captures 23rd state crown

Brophy’s juggernaut swim team extended its state championship streak to 23 Saturday, Nov. 6 with a victory at the Kino Aquatics Center in Mesa.

The Brophy swim team, which ended the meet with 474.5 points, now has won 23 consecutive state titles and 29 out of their last 30. Mr. Pat O’Neill captured his fifth title as coach of the Brophy team and he was confident heading into the meet.

“We have depth,” Mr. O’Neill said. “We are the only team that can put three or four swimmers in nearly every state event.”

State championship streak hits 23 years for Bronco swimmers

The Brophy swim team has been the 5A-1 state champions for 23 consecutive seasons.

They have clinched the title every year since 1989, a year in which rebellions in the Eastern Bloc would end the Soviet Union.

With 33 total state championships, the Broncos have more titles that any MLB, NBA, NFL or NHL team.

Swim and dive soar over Salpointe at Speedo Invitational

The Brophy swim and dive team continues to lead the state as they took the gold home at several meets, including the Speedo Classic Invitational Oct. 2.

At this major invitational, the Broncos proved their merit, winning first place out of 38 teams with 333 points, beating out Salpointe, who came in second with 142 points.

Brophy Swim and Dive brings home title-again

Brophy has won 22 consecutive state swimming titles as of Nov. 7.
The senior swimmers have been alive four fewer years than this streak, to put it in perspective.

“A lot of people expect it,” said coach Mr. Patrick O’Neill.

Eight out of 18 swimmers in the meet were swimming in the state competition for the first time, making it a new and exciting experience for some on the team.

Brophy swimming dominates the pool

Brophy’s swim team beat Hamilton by nearly 100 points Oct. 8, winning by a count of 138 to 42, according to VarsityExtra.com.

Brophy won each of the relay races and John Wojciechowski ’10 won his race, the 100-meter backstroke, by almost four seconds.
